Baptists celebrate 400th anniversary with inspiring congress

820 Baptists from 57 different countries came to Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Baptist movement. It was a happy celebration filled with inspiring worship, reflecting back on 400 years of Baptist history. Special speeches were delivered on religious freedom, mission, community and discipleship. Additionally, choirs from Russia, Ukraine and Hungary featured special selections of music. Brothers and sisters from Chile, Lebanon, Germany, Ukraine, Jordan and many other countries shared about the situation in their churches and about their attempts to spread the gospel and help the needy.
Part of the programme included a historical tour through Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon. Baptist history started in Amsterdam 400 years ago and participants of the conference visited some sites of particular interest to Baptists. On Bakkerstraat (Baker street), where a baker named Munter allowed the first English Baptists to be, to live and worship, a plaque was revealed to commemorate the occasion.
In the early 1600s a group of religious refugees from England gathered in the back room of an Amsterdam bakery to pray and study the Bible together. By 1609 a group of them had formed what we have come to know as core Baptist convictions, especially the necessity of a believers’ church, separated from state control and practicing believers’ baptism. From these modest beginnings the Baptists spread through England, North America and Europe and beyond to become a worldwide movement with a community of around 100 million members today.
